Where USA have an advantage is the depth across all music genres (jazz, country, folk, soul, hip-hop, rock & roll etc) as well as pop/rock etc. Obviously UK has produced some great artists as well, but IMO not as many if you consider not just rock/pop (& derivatives).

Top 20 artists on this site:

1 The Beatles (UK)
2 Radiohead (UK)
3 Pink Floyd (UK)
4 Led Zeppelin (UK)
5 Bob Dylan (USA)
6 Nirvana (USA)
7 The Clash (UK)
8 The Rolling Stones (UK)
9 The Velvet Underground (USA)
10 U2 (Irish)
11 David Bowie (UK)
12 The Who (UK)
13 Oasis (UK)
14 The Jimi Hendrix Experience (USA)
15 The Beach Boys (USA)
16 The Smiths (UK)
17 Bruce Springsteen (USA)
18 Pearl Jam (USA)
19 Pixies (USA)
20 The Doors (USA)

The above doesn't answer the original question directly as there's more to consider apart from the raw data on this site about what is the best artist (and the above is biased to the more popular music genres), but UK are doing well considering England is about the size of Oregon! (the above results are 50% UK, 45% USA and 5% Irish)

i guess i'm about 50/50 in terms of personal preference, with a slight leaning towards the US perhaps..

there's no denying though that the UK has produced far more per capita, which i'm acutely aware of having grown up down the road from jimmy page and then moving to down the road from brian eno.. without realising who either of them were at the time, mind

there is something about the british public though, they do seem to take a little easier to more subversive, experimental types.. i'm just reminded of the luke warm reception pet sounds received in the states compared to the uk..

but yeah.. it does seem the rest of the world lags behind us as a collective by about 5/6 years

It really depends upon your tastes.

My top 100 is almost evenly split between the two (with a smattering of others). I have a preference for UK artists but there's certain American sounds I like and the British don't do them.

Without considering hip hop it's an easy choice for me UK all the way.

But throw hip hop into the mix and it's about 50 50.

I suppose you have to ask yourself, if you can only listen to UK or USA music from now until forever which would you pick? Well I guess I'd miss UK music more so I'll go for UK.

Of my top 50 artists the US wins 34-15. The sheer volume of US music is the main reason for their advantage. The UK output is impressive considering it's comparative size though, although I don't think it's quite fair to compare it to the size of Oregon. People rather than land makes music so the UK really is one fifth the size of the US.

Would it be fair to compare the average brain sizes?
