- Post subject: Favourite or Greatest?
|
I've been thinking (it hurts, yes). This is the site for best ever albums based on personal opinion. Therefore, should our charts reflect our favourites or our opinion of the greatest?
Previously, I have relied on favouritism for my chart but I decided to cut back on the 00s and added albums from previous decades in order to achieve a chart that is closer to determining greatness than plain favourites.
Any opinions?

You've just opened up the can of worms in Pandora's box. We've talked about this many times in other threads. My favorites are my favorites because they are the greatest albums I've heard. Things in life can be great to only one person, and that's what I choose to put on my chart.
If I made a chart which reflected the most important works to society or the history of popular music, most of those albums would not even be ones I like, and the chart would ultimately be superfluous since there are 1000s of lists out there that already reflect that. If everyone did that this site would be pointless. I think we're all aware of what bands are the most worshiped and important to the masses and we don't really need someone to make a chart telling us that. Sgt. Pepper's one of the most important to society? *gasp* You don't say! These faux rock historians with their redundant lists are a laugh.
I look at people's charts to get an idea of their taste in music, not to get a history lesson.

We can all stand back and admire OK Computer with it's ambition and achievement... But most would prefer In Rainbows because it is (forgive the expression) easier listening.
The same with Sgt.Pepper, but Revolver is better because it's god better toe tappin tunes on it, and so wins affection from those that hear it for the first time easier.
It shouldn't feel like work to like an album
The greatest albums are determined by our love of them, not it's social impact, or any other factor.
If you like No Jacket Required by Phil Collins Harkan, it's OK, you can put it on your chart... no one will judge you for it. We're all friends here!
