A new feature on the site is the ability to mark albums as compilations, and the main purpose behind this was to provide people with the ability to filter out compilation albums (or tracks appearing on them), out of some of the charts (e.g. in the top-rated song chart).

The definition from Wikipedia is that "a compilation album is an album (music or spoken-word) featuring tracks from one or more performers, often culled from a variety of sources (such as studio albums, live albums, singles, demos and outtakes.)"

'Best of' albums, box sets and such-like are obvious examples, but I think there are examples as well where it is less obvious e.g. if an album has a mix of old and new material. So, I think we need to work out a definition for BEA before too many albums are moderated, so this thread is here to debate the issue & establish some guidelines.

Let's have a filter for live albums which are just live compilations. Should we really be using scarlet letters?

Three examples:

Elbow - Dead In The Boot - A B-Sides compilation

Joy Divison - Still - Contains unreleased tracks and live tracks

Watchmen Soundtrack - Music from various artists and is separate to the score of the film

My main concern with this is that some valid tracks could be filtered out of the top-rated songs chart if an album is marked as a compilation, but a particular track is new to that album.

The Cure - Boys Don't Cry

Regarding this, I see it as a compilation, but then that's because here in Britain the debut album was Three Imaginary Boys. My dad always regarded Boys Don't Cry as a compilation, so I do. I'm sure other people probably see it differently. Either way, it's a superior listen to Three Imaginary Boys (although that's going somewhat off-topic). It is often difficult to label a compilation, but overall I like the idea. I don't believe best-ofs, live compilations (I'm think Live 1975-1985) and b-sides/rarities collections have any place in a discussion of the greatest albums of all-time, but for albums that are none of those then it is an hard to come to a concrete conclusion. I class remix albums as albums, not compilations - provided that the remixes are all of songs from one album and were done for that particular project. And, though I personally class Boys Don't Cry as a compilation, I'd also call it an album on this site, as it is basically another The Clash USA (except a little more confusing).

I agree with this.

I'm not completely opposed to branding some albums as compilations as long as we don't apply a filter for same to the Overall chart. The problem with such a label is it implies a snobbish assertion that compilations aren't worth hearing and that could limit the neophyte's discovery and enjoyment of great music.

I completely disagree. This site's title is Best Ever Albums, and we're essentially here to rank and discuss the greatest albums of all-time. That should not include compilations IMO.
