About album of the day: The BestEverAlbums.com album of the day is the album appearing most prominently in member charts in the previous 24 hours. If an album, or artist, has previously been selected within a x day period, the next highest album is picked instead (and so on) to ensure a bit of variety.
'Superman' is overrated... It's not even an original (The Clique)...
But 'Fall on Me' and 'Cuyahoga' are both great 'green' political songs, and Side A in general is gold. This is the last album to hear REM before they became massive. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
People that have been here a while know I love R.E.M. and I'm neither embarrassed nor apologetic about it. This one didn't used to stand out to me before, but over the years it has grown in stature and it's become my third favorite R.E.M. album and yes, it's on my chart. It's the first time, they really started to rock out with abandon on record. It's also their first sort of topical album shining the spotlight on some pertinent political issues without crossing over into Bono territory. Also, it includes I Believe, my second favorite song of theirs after Driver 8. I recommend it highly. Also, if I were to have a web site like the "How to Listen to Dylan" guy, this would be an album I would recommend as a starter album for the R.E.M. neophyte, or more likely and accurately, the R.E.M. I.R.S. years neophyte.
In case you've never heard it, here's one of their most underrated, under sung songs from LRP, I Believe:
One of their finest. Begin the Begin, These Days, Fall on Me, Cuyahoga, Hyena and I Believe are all classics. The guitar solo in The Flowers Of Guatemala is so simple yet so powerful too.
Superman isn't that great a track and they didn't write it, but it's a bit of fun in it's own right and nicely closes the album.
This album just has the sound of four cool guys making music they want to make and having great fun at the same time whilst in their prime.
I generally rate this as the best REM album although song for song you might pick others like Document and its popular to pick Automatic (which to me, was the beginning of their end). I don't care if Superman is not original it's a great effing closer to a fine, fine album. _________________ Top Canadian songs, keyless entry remotes, home care, whatever...
