This has been an absolutely phenomenal decade for music, though. |

Brohio the original question says era not decade. But go ahead and choose any decade from 1600 to 1910. Plenty of great composers to choose from Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Lully, George Frideric Handel, Arcangelo Corelli, Claudio Monteverdi, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Henry Purcell, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Luigi Boccherini, Mauro Giuliani, Fernando Sor, Muzio Clementi, Jan Ladislav Dussek, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Ludwig Spohr, E.T.A. Hoffman, Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Frédéric Chopin, Hector Berlioz, Niccolò Paganini, Robert Schumann, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, and Jean Sibelius, etc. _________________ Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by RFNAPLES

For jazz, from 1949 to 1967 (I'll end with Stellar regions, although I can enjoy Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra and some Archie Shepp stuff.)
.
As far as pop/rock music is concerned, my favourite eras are :
- 1965-1970, garage rock & psychedelic pop mostly, but also the masterpieces from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks or The Byrds date from that period (and my favourite Stones albums are still Aftermath and Beggars banquet).
- 1975-1982 or so, from Patti Smith to Pornography by The Cure via punk & post-punk, be they from NYC or England
- from 1991 (Loveless, Blue lines, Laughing stock) to 1996 or so (when electronic music took over)
- the 00s are still too fresh for me to have a general idea
.
For French music (I'm from there) the best eras probably were the late 60s (Serge !), from 1980 to 1984 (French new-wave & punk with a slight delay ), and the 92-99 period in which most of the established artists of today arrived.
.
For folk music (my favourite genre), a 1965-1972 range seems to englobe everything I like the most. The "neo-folk" revival, from 1993 onwards is very interesting too (Palace, Red House Painters, Smog, Mazzy Star, Cat Power) but seems to have been dying off since 1999 or so (although Bill Callahan or Will Oldham are still capable of releasing beautiful albums).
.
Electronic music : I'd say 1975-1980 is incredible, be it only for Kraftwerk, then 1988-1996 (when lounge electronica was everywhere and sort of disgusted me of electronic music for a while).
.
For Rap, 1979-1999 was incredible. So much good stuff to listen too.
.
I am an ignorant on classical music and therefore cannot judge.

ahem.... first of all, failing one of your cockamamie tests is a success where I'm from. While I, in no way have to prove to every dweeb that slithers by, how much I know about music, I am assuming that most that gather here are comparing lists from our lifetime. Luckily, you can't bore anyone in here with your braggadocio, but you are entertaining even if insecure.

Exactly. I've been waiting for him to prove that he is indeed superior to all of us, as he suggests. Show us the righteous path, brohio.

As I peruse a few lists... I of course can't disagree with most Beatles, Dylan, Stones etc... blah blah blah.... and frankly MY favorite Hendrix album is Axis: Bold as Love. I don't really see that one on any lists but rather see his 1st and 3rd albums here and there. I put Axis as the best album of all time until I hear something better. There are other albums probably just as good but its my pick for number 1. I saw him live 3 times and he's my pick as best artist behind the Beatles. I hate to give away all my secrets tho. I love turning people on to some of the things I've found. But it's always in person not by typing. Years ago I did compile my top 100. It would be a little different today. I think my top ten would include Revolver and the White Album. Beggars Banquet. I love Edgar Winters White Trash. Soft Machine Third, Phantom Power, Diesel and Dust... and for those who are looking for someone new... try Peter Adams. His 2nd album is sweet. Not in my top ten but worth a listen. Maybe that will get your juices flowing and if it does ask me politely for more suggestions. I like to rock mostly so if Baroque's your game I don't think I have much for you.
