I've been a bit "lazy" this year, as - lately I've been mostly watching TV series, so I still have to watch most of the films.. I did watch Social network though, and I loved it.

I'd like to see Inception win, but it will never happen. Oscars seem to value the mass market films over anything else (very rarely anything else wins).

I never miss a ceremony. And I've seen 9/10 of these and can say that the social network is far and away the best picture of these nominees and the year. But I'm pretty sure the kings speech is winning.

Christopher Nolan is still considered by some as an "indie director". You can't really say that "Inception" is mainstream. The only thing mainstream about it is it's promotion campaign, which brought to the movie all the people it did. I think it was a huge bet for the director AND the producers. It's an awesome film, but not your usual mass market flick.

well it's the second highest grossing movie in that list of nominees (2nd only to Toy Story 3 which was the highest grossing film last year as well as being in the top 10 highest grossing films of all time). To be honest I might be in the minority here but I think Inception is as mainstream as Pirates of The Carribean, The Matri Reloaded, Transformers, War Of The Worlds etc etc. I mean It has a big name star, big production values and at least half of the film is action scenes. that to me is a popcorn blockbuster. And it certainly makes Inception a more marketable movie than 80% of the other films nominated.

Hmmm, I'm not sure.
When people go and see Pirates, War of the Worlds, Transformers, they KNOW what they're going to see (pirates, aliens, robots + action), hence the blockbusters.
With a title like Inception, people didn't even know what to expect.
Yes, Di Caprio is a big name now, but can't really say his latest movies have been mainstream either (Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island...).

fair point about people not knowing what to expect. Maybe we just have different definition's of "mainstream"

Well I don't think a movie becomes mainstream with the number of entries it makes.

I think mainstream is when the film industry believes the subject will appeal to a large public, staying within boundries of usual storyline, plot etc...
