What are some songs that sound like other songs? Not slightly altered covers or something obvious like a hip-hop track which samples another song. Songs that maybe borrow a riff and change it around a little, or songs that have suspiciously similar chord progressions, etc.

Here are a few I can think of (earlier song first):

"Weissensee" by Neu - "Us & Them" by Pink Floyd
The Dylan influenced "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles - "4th Time Around" by Bob Dylan
"Hungry Freaks, Daddy" by Frank Zappa - "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath
"Dirt" by The Stooges - "Meet Ze Monsta" by PJ Harvey

I've been listening to Arcade Fire lately, and the first track on Funeral sounds like David Bowie from Heroes singing The Band. I'll have to go back to Music from Big Pink to figure out what song exactly. Right after I noticed this similarity, I found out that both The Band and Arcade Fire are Canadian, which may be more than mere coincidence.

And in the same vein as Norwegian Wood/4th Time Around, Jigsaw Puzzle by the Stones is a pretty good Dylan imitation.

Just about anything by Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic parodies somebody else’s work.

The melody of "I was Meant for the Stage" by The Decemberists sounds an awful lot like "Fields of Gold" by Sting. Laughing

I think the Stones Stray Cat Blues or some other Rolling Stones song directly lifted a song from the Velvet Underground.

Oh, yeah. They totally ripped off the bassline! The thing is, Paul Weller admitted it too.

This thread raises the question of how original and unique it is actually possible to be nowadays. And then there's this famous adage:

Good artists borrow. Great artists steal

If that adage is true, then as alluded to earlier, Noel Gallagher and Co. are some of the best ever. Laughing

The Jam also ripped off the clipped guitar part also that is on "Taxman" in which that guitar part supposedly influenced Hendrix to use later on "Purple Haze".
