A rock opera is an extremely over-blown and pretentious work that tells a story and is very long. There has only been one good rock opera ever made, which is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis.
Also I think the idea of this thread is pretty good

Weird how a forum about searching albums by genre could turn into a discussion about rock operas.

I agree some rock operas are pretty pretentious (but not necessarily bad). *cough* THE WALL *cough*
Some other good ones are Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, and King Diamond's Abigail.

Please understand that there's a difference between "concept album" and "rock opera". Christ, some of the shit in this thread borders on blasphemy.

The only one I mentioned that was probably my mistake was Operation: Mindcrime. The others are certainly rock operas.

Is the default word for insulting music always "pretentious"?

Can you really argue that Roger Waters wasn't being pretentious on The Wall?? And while I feel that way, I don't dismiss the album just because of it. I still think it's a great album.
