DAY 10 OF MY BOND MOVIE MARATHON
Today: The Spy Who Loved Me

Man, I am loving the Moore films a lot more than I'd expected I would. While I realize the Connery movies surely stay truer to the source material, Moore's movies are pure cinema.

The primary thing I liked about The Spy Who Loved Me is Bond takes on much more of a leader role. In numerous of the earlier films (i.e. Thunderball, You Only Live Twice) the climax involved two small armies attacking each other. Each time, Bond hung back and charged in halfway through the battle.
In this one, Bond is leading the charge in the submarine, and when they hit a wall (literally), he's the one who plants the explosives so they can finish the charge.

There wasn't really anything about this movie I disliked. Almost all the earlier movies had a "What the....?!" moment. This one was mostly free of that.
Plus, it was free of appearances by the redneck sheriff from the last two movies! For a while I was worried he'd be the new Felix Leiter or something...

OVERALL RANKINGS:
1. From Russia With Love
2. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. Goldfinger
4. The Man With the Golden Gun
5. Diamonds Are Forever
6. You Only Live Twice
7. Thunderball
8. Dr. No
9. Live and Let Die
10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service

(yes, I did a little reorganizing. And yes, I put a Moore film above Goldfinger. Sorry.)

Up next: Moonraker!

For me:

The Godawful Bond Films

23: Die Another Day (Pierce Brosnan)
22: Octopussy (Roger Moore)
21: Diamonds Are Forever (Sean Connery)
20: Moonraker (Roger Moore)
19: A View to a Kill (Roger Moore)

The Cringeworthy Bond Films

18: Tomorrow Never Dies (Pierce Brosnan)
17: The Man with the Golden Gun (Roger Moore)
16: The World is Not Enough (Pierce Brosnan)

The Flawed Bond Films

15: Live and Let Die (Roger Moore)
14: Quantum of Solace (Daniel Craig)
13: Thunderball (Sean Connery)

The Good Bond Films

12: For Your Eyes Only (Roger Moore)
11: Licence To Kill (Timothy Dalton)
10: You Only Live Twice (Sean Connery)

The Awesome Bond Films

9: Goldfinger (Sean Connery)
8: GoldenEye (Pierce Brosnan)
7: Dr. No (Sean Connery)
6: The Spy Who Loved Me (Roger Moore)

The Perfect Bond Films

5: Casino Royale (Daniel Craig)
4: From Russia With Love (Sean Connery)
3: The Living Daylights (Timothy Dalton)
2: Skyfall (Daniel Craig)
1: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (George Lazenby)

It's a bit of a tossup between Skyfall and OHMSS (TLD is in that conversation a little as well), but I'm inclined to say OHMSS. It basically had everything in it that makes a good Bond film. To anyone who's only watched OHMSS once and doesn't favour it, I'm begging you to give it one or two more watchthroughs. I did, and I don't regret it one bit.

I loved Skyfall. This should give you an idea how much I loved the others above it.

Dalton's my favourite Bond, as you know. LTK and TLD are just solid pieces of cinema in their own right.

Dalton is massively underrated. Honestly your list is rock solid, the only things I would change would be moving Goldfinger somewhere into the top 10 and putting The World Is Not Enough at the very bottom.
