Much of the aesthetics were inspired by Japanese culture, such as Darth Vader's helmet strongly resembling a samurai kabuto. Mystical all-binding will force of life itself, a lone ronin taking on a corrupted shogun - these are all classic Japanese tropes. Chewbacca himself certainly resembles something culled from Shinto mythology.
But yeah, characters like Han Solo and Boba Fett carry very strong Western influence as well.

Mhm, George Lucas has said that he was very strongly influenced by Western's while he was writing it, which is one of the reasons it resembles the Hero's Journey so much.

He's too good for President. Take on a job where he's immediately blamed for every problem in the world, and so busy he wouldn't have time for his movies (and DOCTOR HORRIBLE 2!! GET ON WITH IT MAN!!)
