I know this may seem dumb, but I am doing this I guess more for an exercise in clarification.

So... Jimi Hendrix is all anyone really cares about in his bands he was in, but I kinda feel like although he was the big talent, he wasn't a solo artist. He was in bands (Band of Gypsys and The Jimi Hendrix Experience) and yet I see him often as one of the best solo artists... it'd kinda be like saying Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain were solo artists because their aura was so big in their bands.

On another note... anyone know much about his posthumous studio albums? Is that why there is a "debate"? Is that what constitutes him as a solo artist... his posthumous releases?

Jimi Hendrix is by no means a solo artist, he would've been a mere no name without Mitch Mitchells drumming.

Noel Redding and Billy Cox also contributed heavily to his music, but Hendrix could still have been a star without them IMO, but not a star without Mitch Mitchell.

Most solo artists aren't "solo" artists, but in the sense of who the release was credited to, then yes he was a solo artist.

So... when this site first started, there was a separation between Jimi Hendrix and The Jimi Hendrix Experience... anyone remember if it was Jimi Hendrix= band of gypsys and all posthumous releases? At that time was he considered a solo artist by this site?

As indicated in this discussion:
http://www.besteveralbums.com/phpBB2/vi...php?t=1615

I believe since then, we just now have listed Jimi Hendrix...

I know this is splitting hairs, but it also is interesting that one of our most loved artists has such a strange ambiguity to his "status", both on this site as well as the music community at large...

Yet, we all agree he wasn't a solo artist? Or do we...? If so, when is the cut off?

The Experience were crucial in making Jimi what he was, especially Mitchell's drumming. As much as I love some of his post Experience stuff it ain't in the same league... but who knows what he might have gone on to do.
