So this may be something small, but found it to be funny nonetheless...
This is the only place where I have experienced someone can say something is overrated and it be true, because things are literally rated on this site.
I just think this interesting because making a comment like that album is overrated didn't really mean much more than you think it is getting more attention that it deserves, but here, things are actually based on ratings... Before it wasn't tangible with facts to back up that assumption...
Thoughts on my insignificant realization?

Because RYM, Rolling Stone, and countless other rank-based music forums and music critics simply did not exist before BEA...

Uhhh.. what? There is so much wrong with this, but I'll just focus on one aspect of it. Even on a website or anything that actually does rate things, you still can't say things are overrated because there is no base for what a particular album should be rated. How can say which album is overrated, which is underrated, and which is rated just right. Everyone is going to have their own opinions. _________________

Well, presumably most music discussion is opinion and if someone is of an opinion that something is underrated or overrated, of course it can be discussed. Sometimes you get that lucky case where it is discussed civilly. I don't think in terms of what is under- or overrated, just explicitly what I like and what I don't like. However, Jason, I especially like your highlighting of should; it really highlights the truth that all our discussion is all about personal evaluation.

I have no problem with overrated/underrated being discussed, just not in the objective sense that it appears sethmadsen implied it could be.

I think you guys are reading too much into poor seth's original post. He's simply saying this is one of the few places where you can discuss whether or not an album is over- or under-rated and have an actual ranking to judge it against, whereas in real life saying an album is over- or under-rated is kind of meaningless.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure I agree, but I guess it's all about your own personal experiences.

This is exactly what I meant, and the end of what you said I think maybe ties what I was trying to say with what Jason was saying: whereas in real life saying an album is over- or under-rated is kind of meaningless.
I guess as purple pointed out, it all really is meaningless to discuss, because what matters is if you like it, or you don't, but I guess we talk about our opinions on this site to reach some kind of validation or understand or something... even if they are totally rejected at times.
