although they both fall under the category of electronic music and use some similar musical approaches (like the way they loop), their styles are kind of different, so hard to say.
but I'd be inclined to pick daft punk, simply because they've released more consistently good material than the avalanches have. a band that only releases 1-2 really good album(s) + a couple of good EPs and then drops off the maps for over a decade rarely does it for me (only MBV is allowed to do that).
luckily, they're working on the second studio album, and it will be interesting to listen to both the avalanches album and the daft punk album when they come out this year, respectively. looking forward to them as much as I was looking forward to the my bloody valentine release.
I'm also looking forward to the Flaming Lips release The Terror, which is out... tomorrow lol
I know what I'm doing with my time on Monday!
Since I Left You is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I'm gonna go with Daft Punk. Discovery, and especially Homework, are also perfect. Daft Punk also have an incredibly cool image, and much better singles than The Avalanches in my opinion. That being said, Daft Punk also pulled a Led Zeppelin on Discovery and just ripped songs so blatantly with little change, whereas (though 100% sampled) Since I Left You feels incredibly original, and is one of the best pop sound collages outside of 3 feet high and rising and Paul's Boutique. I eagerly await both of their upcoming releases.

I've never heard the term "pulled a Led Zeppelin." Surprising, right? What does it mean?

LZ were famous for taking various already existing songs, covering them without changing anything much and then taking credit as if they had been the original artists.
