can't really argue with an mf doom pick, definitely a worthy candidate for a shortlist.. but i'm gonna have to go with canibus if it's strictly a lyrical contest..
his battle raps are incredible although i'm not really into all that.. i prefer to hear raps about metaphysics and conspiracy theories, so long as they don't get too nerdy or anything
i still remember being blown away by '100 bars' when i was about 15.. and it still sounds incredible now..
Incredible song you posted there telefunker! I'm pretty impressed by it!
Anyway, how about Nas? I know most of you have probably heard Illmatic already but he has made plenty more albums that I enjoy. Am I the only one here to rate his albums after Illmatic?
you'd better be careful not to agree with me too much though, as according to gooserocker, you've already written this..
but yeah, nas has been fairly consistently great throughout his career.. this is one of my favourite ever rap songs.. owing mainly to the beat though.. it's off god's son, which is a bit hit and miss..
Canibus is amazing. I was listening to Rip the Jacker this morning. That has to be top 5 hip-hop albums of all-time lyrically. It's hard comparing him and Doom because they do totally different things with language. I personally prefer Doom's abstract lyrics, wordplay, and use of metaphor. I think Canibus is the most successful at taking rap to a intellectual level that's unprecedented and very important.
Rakim is truly the quintessential MC. It's mindblowing how impressive his rhyme technique was back in the 80s, while most of his contemporaries were fairly simple.
Nas is a good storyteller. From "One Love" to "I Gave You Power" to "Rewind" and so on, he's arguably the best at narratives.
I don't think Chuck D is a good lyricist. I just think he had a commanding presence and charisma, which made up a lot for his I-just-read-the-Malcolm X-autobiography-now-I-want-to-be-an-MC style of political hip-hop. Tbh, I mostly like It Only Takes a Nation... because of the outstanding production.
