This has been on my chart since the first time I've listened to it. Great record if you're angry or killing some guy in the street.

Incredible. The pinnacle of rap-metal. Sheer fury from start to finish, filled with sick guitar licks and loaded with amazing instrumental jams. Doesn't get much better.

Excellent album. It's the only thing that saves "rap metal" from being a complete joke. Tom Morello is one of the most innovative guitar players, plus we have the same favorite guitar player, Randy Rhoads. _________________

It's kinda sad that the influence this otherwise great album had was wasted mostly during the late '90s-early '00s on dozens of shitty bands like Limp Bizkit, but anyway... Maybe I'm among the minority for expressing this, but Killing In The Name, although pretty cool and with great guitar playing by Morello, is definitely not the best track in here. My personal preference is Know Your Enemy, with Bombtrack as a close call. Actually all the songs sound very similar, in order probably to achieve some kind of cohesion, so that this sounds more like a complete manifest rather than a collection of separate tracks. Anger is the perfect word to describe it; De La Rocha's vocals assure he's not fucking around, while besides maybe the intro to Settle For Nothing, there's not a single calm moment in here, therefore giving their message a sense of urgency. It probably drags towards the end and it's true that the lack of variety becomes boring after a while no matter how raw and true the lyrics sound or how awesome Morello's guitar sounds like; but for most of the time, it fulfills its purposes and works perfectly as a powerful political statement. It's the kind of record I'm not always in the right mood to listen to, yet when the timing is right for this to be played, it fits amazingly well. Definitely not perfect, but a very solid and vivid effort nevertheless, no wonder it has so many fans. It seems like this recipe suited them well, since every song I've listened from them which does not belong in this one has exactly the same sound, not that it's bad, just sayin'...

Why should who this album influence matter? Nothing to do with RATM or their album, really. And I know for a fact that not all bands who are influenced by this are bad, for example Muse are very strongly influenced by RATM.
On to the album, I think it's a very interesting album. Definitely very different from a lot of albums, but fuses many aspects of music together. Has some very catchy songs on it.

I'm put off this album because it's the sort of thing 12 year olds listen to to be 'against the system'.
I've yet to hear it though, might be good.

I stated this because rap metal in particular as a sub-genre which was widely popularized with this album could end up being something far more interesting, yet we mostly had cases like the band I mentioned. I do not doubt there were also good acts inspired by the style of RATM, but I was mostly referring to the genre which sadly became a joke within less than a decade from that moment and afterwards.
