HigherThanTheSun wrote: | Yeah been meaning to ask you Tekin, thanks for the insight. BBC and other news sources seem to be going on the angle that a lot of the discontent is due to the perceived undermining of secularism in the country, which I know is very important for many Turks. If you don't mind giving your analysis on that I'd be interested to hear. Also your opinion on how important secularism is for Turkey? |
Well there are Kemalists in Turkey that use the word to accuse the government for its apparently Islamic decisions but nothing has happened that is an actual threat to the secularism in the state. Kemalists themselves are more of a threat. Secularism has always been fundamental in Turkey and never have been threatened seriously but those who boast of secularism all the time have been involved in coups and stuff. AKP has no power to change the secularist nature of the constitution and there are many pressure groups that will not let that happen. It's not actually a problem but a pretence under which opposing parties can lay all the blame on the government. Well it's an easy target when the leaders of the ruling party claim to be devout Muslims. They have proposed two series of changes in the constitution in the past decade, and nothing in those changes have been even remote attempts at changing the secularist nature of the state. And don't get me wrong; there are a lot of conservative people in the country who vote for them to see this happen: a change towards Islamification of the country (I can say almost 50% of AKP supporters are like this) but the leaders of the party have always emphasised importance of secularism because they know that Turkey cannot live without it. These demonstrations are targeted at Erdoğan, the leader of AKP because he's an idiot stubborn guy but there are other more reasonable voices inside the party that can pull it off. Many are suspicious of the guy's possible hidden ambitions for an Islamic government and it's good to have a vigilant eye but when there are no signs you should think that why there's so much emphasis on secularism from the opposition. I think because it's their only weapon against the government since they made the country broke when they had a president at the helm.

Thanks for all the insight in regards to the situation in Turkey.
The Huffington Post is a disgusting cesspool that hopefully doesn't represent Americans, especially when it comes to the comments. I do love reading them though. There's definitely a major difference between the city and rural folks. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Well, yeah. That's been done before I think and also when the protests take place in a rather small and limited area it's easy to organize and use such things. Unfortunately in other cities police pressure is much more powerful and media coverage is barely existent, e.g. in Izmir police has arrested about 20 people for encouraging protesters via Twitter.

Reminded me of the GOP politicians who are outspoken on 'moral issues', only to be found propositioning for sex or mastubating in public bathrooms. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.

Pretty depressing tbh. Fuck being gay in a country where only 2% of people "accept homosexuality," that's pretty fucked. And still a quarter of the people in my country feel the same way, crazy _________________ Shut up mate you're boring!
