I was just listening to a story about the Idle No More movement and the music it inspires on CBC radio. They were speaking to a group of First Nations' artists who have started their own record label and internet radio station:
I've often been curious about music by First Nations' artists (Canada or USA), but I haven't known where to begin. I'm curious about artists who happen to be aboriginal, whether their music is tied to First Nations' culture and issues or not.
In Canada, we've had three First Nations' artists promoted above others - Susan Aglukark, Buffy St. Marie, and Tom Jackson. I'm interested in more contemporary work.
Anyone have anything to suggest?
Please don't use this as an opportunity to weigh in on First Nations' issues, status, stereotypes etc... Save that for the politics section. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
I might be able to dig up some interesting folk music from the indigenous tribes of the American Southwest, if that's what you're asking. Or are you looking specifically for Canadian artists?

Anything... but specifically N.American. Dig away - I'd really appreciate it. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
So I decided to go searching for some Comanche music. It's largely chant, percussion, and flute music. Here's a couple of albums I found that might be of interest to you. They repeatedly popped up in my search.

(haven't found a listening source yet)

Here's a youtube playlist of Comanche songs. I haven't gone all the way through it yet. Some of the videos are only music-related. In fact the list organization is crap, but have fun.

Specifically there's four songs I was trying to find:
Raid Song
Christian Hymn
Round Dance Song
49 Song (on youtube, but horrible quality)
I'm having trouble finding them. Searching for this music really drives home that this culture is dying.
Purple was the only responder. I suppose I should be more clear - I'm looking for contemporary N.American aboriginal artists. (I already know of Robbie Robertson, Buffie St. Marie and Tom Jackson... ) _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
I was gonna say Buffy Sainte-Marie... other than her, I can't help you, sorry.
EDIT: unless you include Mexico in N.America, in which case I can recommend a haunting release
Mushroom Ceremony of the Mazatec Indians of Mexico, mostly chanted by a Maria Sabina.
