So far as I know any song on that album named after a place (and that's most of them) does attempt to capture the essence of that place.
here' what he said about 'Perth'
The first thing I worked on, the riff and the beginning melodies, was the first song on the record, 'Perth,'" Vernon says. "That was back in early 2008. The reason I called it that right away, is because I was with a guy that I didn't know very well, but basically, it's a long story, but in the three days we were supposed to spend together — he's a music video maker — in those three days, his best friend [Heath Ledger] died. And his best friend was from Perth. It just sort of became the beginning of the record. And Perth has such a feeling of isolation, and also it rhymes with birth, and every song I ended up making after that just sort of drifted towards that theme, tying themselves to places and trying to explain what places are and what places aren't.
I mean, we are apparently the most geographically isolated city in the world...but it doesn't neccecarily feel that way. But yeah, that last line I guess is what is pertinent here. Even if a song isn't explicitly lyrically about a place I think it can quite often capture the a more essential part.
I'm curious about the story behind Calgary. Unfortunatley, if one wanted to capture the intial vibe of the city, it would have to be a song about cocky soulless oil money. Those who live here know there's much more to the place, but that's the initial stereotype. Just ask Necharsian. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
Grant Lee Buffalo - Bethlehem Steel
Jim Croce - New York's Not My Home
Billy Joel - New York State of Mind
Billy Joel - Allentown
Billy Joel - Leningrad
Jesus Jones - The Rocket Ships of La Jolla
Gordon Lightfoot - Somewhere, U.S.A. (ok, borderline about a place )
The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreaming
Keane - Sovereign Light Cafe
Simon and Garfunkel - Bleecker Street
Travis - New Amsterdam
ugh, can't think this hard today for some reason...this is enough for me. _________________ <(: @ >

Apparently it is about Calgary... Justin Vernon knows many Calgarians, but has never been here. So he wrote a song about being in love with people you haven't met...
1. Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
2. Prince - All The Critics Love U in New York
3. Nas - NY State of Mind
4. The Clash - London Calling
5. David Bowie - Panic in Detroit
6. Led Zeppelin - Going to California
7. Outkast - West Savannah
8. N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
9. The Smiths - Rusholme Ruffians
Almost anything by Bruce Springsteen about the glorious state of New Jersey (except for maybe "Streets of Philadelphia", but that's about a place that's pretty damn close to New Jersey).
"Atlantic City", "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)", "Badlands", "The Promised Land", and "Born to Run" come to mind. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
