I was just now flipping through IMDb's Top 250, as well as Sight And Sounds Top 250, and it struck me how many great, famous movies there are that I've never seen, despite the fact that I love watching movies, reading about them, and that my job is even writing about movies.

So I decided I'd share some of these with you and see which ones are particularly good that I should watch ASAP, or if any of you have a list of incredibly famous movies you've never seen, but would like to.

For instance, I've never seen....
8 1/2
Das Boot
Once Upon a Time in the West
Touch of Evil
Some Like It Hot
M
Seven Samurai
Aliens
Lawrence of Arabia

Anyone else?

From IMDB's top 250, I have never seen :

The Shawshank Redemption
Forrest Gump
American History X
Saving Private Ryan
Django Unchained
The Dark Knight Rises
Toy Story 3
Wall-E
Intouchables
The Green Mile
Gladiator
The Prestige
To Kill A Mockingbird
LA Confidential
Braveheart

From your list, I'd advise :

8 1/2
Once upon a time in the West
Touch of Evil
M
Some like It Hot
Seven Samurai.

My two favourites in there being M and Touch of Evil, total masterpieces.

Lawrence of Arabia and Aliens are good watch too, but not as essential IMO. You can totally forget Das Boot.

These three I haven't seen either. Actually, I haven't seen shit from Fellini and Lang, and from Welles it's only Citizen Kane which is among my all-time favorite films.
Well, what else? Haven't seen anything by Renoir, Fosse, Ford (except The Searchers), Tarr, Huston, Ashby, Tarkovsky, Bergman's Persona, Tati's Playtime, Bunuel's Viridiana, Lynch's Blue Velvet, Jarmusch's Down By Law...
Fuck, this thread depresses me.
Oh, you should definitely check out Once Upon A Time In The West. Among the best two and a half/three hours you will ever spend, same goes for Some Like It Hot (check out The Apartment as well). Lawrence Of Arabia and Seven Samurai are also excellent, just be sure you can sit through them... Das Boot is also very good, somewhat dull at parts but great ending. Aliens was fun, nothing much more, generally I think Cameron is a really overrated director.

I advise all of those! Wall-E and American History X in particular.

Anyway, think I've seen most of the IMDB list, 12 Angry Men is the highest one I have no recollection of ever seeing but I'm sure there are some big films I've missed.
I'm not a big movie buff, but I do try watch the well known, famous films if I see them around, be it cheap DVDs or on TV and so on.

I can't even describe how much you need to see these movies.

Even if you don't enjoy them, our culture is so shaped by them that you'd be mad not to give them a chance.

Dang, 12 Angry Men is easily in my top 5 favorite movies. A bit slow, but if you let yourself be absorbed in the movie it's amazing.
