Thank you! This was a real treat to look through. A few choices I'm very interested in checking out. Only criticism, but it's a big one, is how limited it is to the 60s and 70s; those were the formative, wild west years of the music, but it only continued to be pushed to new, extreme heights from that ooze to the present day. If you ever want to chat about this music, hmu

Great to hear you think you'll find something new on it Smile Always the goal.

And... yeah... it's 60's & 70's centric... when I compiled the list I was a little disappointed in that myself. The only reason Frank Wright's Your Prayer is so low is because I want to knock it off in place for a little more diversity, but unfortunately it's really good Laughing Same with Roscoe Mitchell's Sound.

The Lounge Lizards should probably be on there... somewhere... shouldn't leave them off I suppose.

Despite the representation, I think my 2010's knowledge is okay, but where I really lack is the 80's (and the 50's... I don't think there was much apart from Cecil and Coleman, but I'm always digging). I have Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales, The Necks' Sex, and Charlie Haden's The Ballad of the Fallen in the queue (along with some other 70's picks), but if you have anything else from around then, fire away.

Lounge Lizards are good, but Voice of Chunk is significantly more exciting to me than the more popular debut. Cecil Taylor's strongest period is the '80s; Garden, Berlin '88, and Tzotzil Mummers Tzotzil are highlights for me, but he's got about 20 albums worth of material that's better than most people's best albums. A Taylor disciple and awe-striking force, Marilyn Crispell, came to prominence with Spirit Music, the solo Labyrinths, and, perhaps most importantly, Braxton's quartets that would eventually solidify into the early '90s Braxton/Crispell/Dresser/Hemingway quartet (arguably the height of music. period.). The Berlin '88 set has among the best piano/drum duos I've heard, and most of the others are from Irene Schweizer's Intakt run of duos with drummers like Sommer, Moholo, Cyrille, etc. Ned Rothenberg's small Lumina label is literally pure gold; my favorites are his first three solos, James Emery's Artlife, and Robert Dick's Whispers and Landings. Peter Kowald has a series of bass duos with Altena, Guy, and Phillips that set the bar for the format; he also started his other great duo series in the '80s based on geography I believe the Europe and Japan sets were released in the '80s; and then he has an excellent trio with Gunter Sommer and Leo Smith, collated on Touch the Earth Break the Shells. Steve Lacy kept on truckin' with expert, masteralbums like Prospectus, Blinks, The Window, and Momentum. James Blood Ulmer blew up then too. Lazro/Leandre's Paris Quartet, Parker/Prevost's Supersession, Brotzmann/Sommer's Reserve, and Anthony Davis' I've Known Rivers are some other highlights not mentioned above. Sure I'm missing stuff, and I'm still exploring the '80s too, but it's as endless and quality as any other.

I see you dig Pete Evans. He's got a great duo with Guy out this year that I really enjoyed

check out my '50s chart for some precursors to this stuff too

Wow, great chart, especially the #1! Smile
I can't decide who has better taste - the real Tilly or the impostor. Wink

I like or love all eight that I've heard, and I'll have to check out the Robyn and Zola Jesus albums.

If you think Robyn is better, why isn't it higher on your chart? Think

E•MO•TION is one of my favorite albums ever (#9 on my chart). This is what I wrote to explain why I like it so much the last time I updated my notes:

baystateoftheart wrote:
A blast of pure, unrelenting euphoria in the form of 80s-inflected pop. This is the perfect album for driving, for putting on with friends, for sing-alongs, for dancing. About as flawless of a sugar rush as you can get from pop music.
