Did you ask why he needs his shift covered? If he has something actually iportant to do, then by all means take it. But if he just doesn't wanna do his shift for some reason like drinking with friends or just being lazy or something...

"Hey! I know it's your day off and all, but can you do me a favor and cover my shift for me because I just don't feel like working and would rather get drunk?"

well, what if that guy NEVER SAID THE REASON WHY??? Hmmm, maybe he didn't want to because he knew what the answer was??? My question was "Did he tell you why?" And said "if." Do you really have to be rude about this?

Do you really think the answer would be anything other than "I have something important to do"? _________________ May we all get to heaven

But what if he ultimately refuses to say what that "important" reason is?

Of course. Everything I say has to be a black hole, right? Well if I try to help, stop trying to dumb me down and be nice about it. Excuse me for trying to help. I've dealt with people that do stupid things like that, alright? I doubt that there are no idiots in the world. Is there a problem with that? I know nothing about Outlaw's friend, and I won't assume he's an idiot. I' just saying that there's a possibility his friend may be someone who just doesn't wanna do work today. Is there a problem with that, too?

In JMan's defense, I would say that the reason behind the missed shift may be valid. Look at who is asking - a nice guy who has run into trouble with his car is different than someone who routinely misses shifts or flakes out.
I'd also say that there's more to this than your own needs. Is this co-worker a nice guy? Would you be getting him out of a jam? You could be unselfish and help him out. Further, you could help out your employer and your colleagues that would be short-shifted. It's something to consider. You don't want to be the doormat that covers for others and is taken advantage of, but if it's a genuine need and a unique occurrence, it makes the situation different.
As far as I see it, I understand your dilemma. Sorry - it's a toss-up. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
