So you would rather pander to the masses than be true to yourself? If you think any of the Kinks albums are great, put them on your chart. Don't exclude them because someone doesn't think highly of them.
RFNAPLES wrote: | While I obviously read the forum topics for insights, I am not all that interested in the rare and obscure titles. Unfortunately given limited financial resources and time, I have chosen my 3000+ collection very carefully. Very little attention has been paid to casual recommendations from individuals, relying instead on "recognized" charts, awards, reviews, sales, and personal preference. |
I find this a little baffling. Okay, you don't have to take other people's opinions into your music taste but do you discover any new music? By the sounds of your comment, you would rather be a creature of habit than a musical tourist. And how high is personal preference on the list when figuring out your chart?
I apologise if I appear to have a bad attitude or anything. I just can't comprehend some of your comments.

Incidentally, I tried that, and it came out at 54.9, so fairly close to yours I think, but perhaps doing something like that may say something about the preference of those albums which make up the aggregate chart, against some you may expect to appear higher, but don't... although what that is, I couldn't honestly say! |

50.5, ranging from The Beatles' White Album (294 charts) to Charles Mingus' Pithecantropus Erectus and Cat Power's You Are Free (I'm somewhat surprised for this one), 2 charts only.

Look at the percentage of 60s and 70s music in your top 10.
In the overall chart: (60s + 70s)/total albums is 8/10, 14/20, 19/30, 22/40, 27/50. Yours is 2/10.
You could also do an analysis related to album origin and you would find that Australian albums for example are listed in fewer charts.
What I am saying is that people's charts which list more 60s and 70s albums have a higher probability of a bigger average. It's not absolute but more likely.

I know The Kinks are a great band and their albums are my favorites. Nevertheless they don’t have an album that would be ranked in the Top 50 by most individuals and therefore are excluded from my chart which attempts to list the greatest albums. I would list them first in any chart of just my favorites though. This is not pandering to the masses but merely providing what the title implies—truth in advertising, if you will.
I don’t rely exclusively on other people’s opinions for making album purchases. I do use them as a filter since I don’t have the time or desire to search for hidden treasures among the 2,472,183 titles on Amazon. No I am not a musical tourist. I prefer to let others do the discovery, then sample before buying. The same is true with art; I go to art museums rather than starving artist shows. Same is true with antiquities; I don't own a metal detector and prefer natural history museums. I don't have the time to be an archeologist or music hunter. I use written tour guides too.
I know what my favorites are; many are shown on my chart. But when asked to list my Best Ever Albums - The Greatest Music Albums of All Time, that is what I do. If asked to list red apples, I wouldn't include golden and green. I don't know why strangers are interested in other strangers' likes and dislikes. I am interested only in their aggregate opinion.
We have numerous 'recognized' and member charts, and they all differ. That is why this site exists, to determine by statistical consensus the best albums. The forums exist as an ancillary musical/social network. _________________ Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by RFNAPLES

The Tourist
Written by: Ray Davies
Published by: Davray Music, Ltd.
Lyrics:
The natives are getting restless in the tropical heat
Work is scarce and children play while the dogs fight in the street
And in the hotels all the tourists dine on local fare
While the waiters stand and stare
And in the street taxi cabs crawl around for vice
To the sound of the tourists in the casino
Rattling the dice, money money
I'm just another tourist checking out the slums
With my plastic Visa drinking with my chums
I dance and swing while ABBA sing
And I flash my Platinum
To the sound of Livin' La Vida Loca
Yes, Livin' La Vida Loca
While in the heat of the street
The native beats his drum
Take the money 'cause it's just another tourist
Having lots of fun
Oh let's go to the Mardi Gras
Oh let's kiss the Blarney Stone
Oh let's hear the Wailing Wall
Oh the Empire State is so very tall
And the Taj Mahal really has a pretty dome
And everywhere that I go I say
I want to make it my home
I'm just another tourist checking out the slums
With my plastic Visa drinking with my chums
Money money _________________ Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by RFNAPLES
