Depends whether you see 'pop' as a genre itself or just a label that can be applied to whatever happens to be popular at any given time. If you look at the BEA nominations for best pop song of 2012 you'll see that most people here see it as an actual genre of music, none of those songs were actually very popular (outside of music nerds). _________________ Shut up mate you're boring!

I like to see it as this: pop music as a genre has evolved and has always had a standardized mechanical structure and watnot - but then there is also "pop charts" aka popular music charts, the billboard, etc. It's two things to me.
