Not necessarily the most successful & longevity is not important. What does matter is how many other bands or genre they influenced.
I've left out some of my favourite bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Allman Brothers because they aren't rock bands.
Please post additions that you might think are worthy of being in the poll.

How can you make a poll about most influential rock band of the 70s without Pink Floyd as an option? Craziness! _________________ "The Beatles, the greatest band known to mankind." - Bismah Mughal

I love the 70's, that decade when the only music existing was hard rock.

Wait, why are these not rock bands? Okay, just forget it. I'm confused now! _________________ "The Beatles, the greatest band known to mankind." - Bismah Mughal

James Brown and the J.B.'s should be on the list.
Funk, Soul, R&B, Rap, Hip-Hop ... so many genres influenced by, started from, sampling James Brown.
On the One!
