I love how film critics equate certain movies to the impact that we get when wars are won or social barriers are crossed. Case in point: "Avatar was a triumph of cosmic proportions for mankind." Really? Did Avatar cause all government members on both sides of the aisle to wear 3D glasses and come to terms on what we need for Health Care Reform?

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - The science-fiction sensation “Avatar” and the war-on-terror thriller “The Hurt Locker” lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for former spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow.

For the first time since 1943 the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

Also nominated for best-picture Tuesday: “District 9”; the animated comedy “Up”; the World War II saga “Inglourious Basterds”; the football drama “The Blind Side”; the recession tale “Up in The Air,” the 1960s drama “A Serious Man,” and the teen tales “An Education” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire.”

it's a big recognition for Pixar and for animated movies in general. i think that it's the first time that an animated movie is nominated in "best movie". even if i do prefer Avatar but i'll be glad too if Up wins.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) was also nominated for Best Picture.
Waltz with Bashir (2008) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

it's true, but in 1991 the category best animated movie didn't existed...i'm not sure that if it was the case, Beauty and the Beast have been anyway nominated in the best picture category.

I think it would have. It also won, among others:
    Annie Awards-Best Animated Feature
    Golden Globe-Best Motion Picture: Comedy/Musical
    KCFCC Award-Best Animated Film
    National Film Registry

I just saw the Hurt Locker, An Education and A Serious Man. The latter two for the second time. I preferred A Serious Man. The Hurt Locker is not entertainment IMO. An Education was okay but nothing more. A Serious Man is one of the funniest movies of 2009, particularly if you're Jewish. My choice for the Oscar is Avatar.

Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Up, or Up in the Air. Best guess--The Hurt Locker.

1. Inglorious Basterds---this movie is so damn good. So...tense and funny at the same time, god this better win
2. District 9---This movie was also really really good. I'd be happy if it won
3. The Hurt Locker---Simple but wrenching. This will probably win
4. Up
5. Star Trek---this is just a blast. Impossible not to like
6. Avatar---awesome experience, but the plot and acting were fairly average and therefore I don't think it deserves best picture.
7. Moon---the most underrated gem of this year
8. Up in the Air
9. Invictus
10. Fantastic Mr. Fox---just cuz of the cello music Smile

Have Not seen Precious, Crazy Heart or An Education

Blind Side should NOT have been nominated.

Last year, as much as I liked Slumdog Millionaire, I think Milk, Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button were all better.
