Here are a few examples of cases where a best-selling album lost in the GRAMMY Awards Album of the Year vote:

Backstreet Boys-Millennium-1999 lost to Steely Dan-Two Against Nature
Madonna-Ray of Light-1998 and Shania Twain-Come On Over-1997 lost to Lauryn Hill-The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Pink Floyd-The Wall-1979 lost to Christopher Cross-Christopher Cross
    The Beatles-Abbey Road-1969 lost to Blood, Sweat & Tears-Blood, Sweat & Tears
Usher-Confessions-2004 lost to Ray Charles & Various Artists-Genius Loves Company
Whitney Houston-Whitney Houston-1985 lost to Phil Collins-No Jacket Required

The fact is you and I have the right to disagree with each other and various critics, charts and consumers. The GRAMMY Awards are votes and we often don’t agree with the outcomes especially when our favorites loose. Look at Obama!

The travesty is the weakness of the Album of the Year nominees list. I wouldn't vote for any of them.

Beyoncé – I Am…Sasha Fierce
Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D.
Lady Gaga – The Fame
Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
Taylor Swift – Fearless

Looking at Obama: I think that Obama would have voted for Beyoncé or Dave Matthews Smile

You spinmeister you. Only 29 of them show up in the Best Ever Albums Top 500. Pretty shabby numbers in my book. Wink

Therein lies the problem. Nominees should be selected by a nonpartisan qualified committee.

Condsidering Amazon lists 2,494,693 titles I don't think being in the top 5,800 is bad. Remember, every album in the Best Ever Albums database appears on at least one chart of a member or "recognized" chart.

Where do you find that non-partisan robotic committee? Bet we would still disagree unless all those "qualified" people were on our list. The voters are all professional members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States with credentials. It is their award and judged by the number of artists present and the number of people watching, I would say it is a pretty big thing.

The Tonys manage to do it successfully. "The awards are jointly administered by the American Theater Wing and the League of American Theaters and Producers. A special nominating committee made up of 27 to 30 members nominates four candidates for each category."

And just how many plays are there in any given year?
