You listen to Dookie (1994) and then compare it to American Idiot (2004), you get the impression that Billy Joe Armstrong really hadn't found his voice yet. In Dookie he's a whiny kid, by American Idiot he's an Old Testament Prophet.

Bias confession: American Idiot is my #2 album of all time. Dookie will probably not make my top 100. Sure, there's a couple of good songs on it. "When I Come Around", "Basket Case," these are pretty good tunes. Oh, but Green Day got soooo much better.

This. That said, the Green Day part I liked the best then was the American Idiot part. I've listened to Dookie once and it wasn't very good, whereas i like American Idiot. Dookie definitely deserves another chance, though I'm not really in a hurry.

when it came out, Dookie was my life for a good year. But I can't help but feel like I've completely outgrown Green Day.

Still, i have to say, this is the best Green Day album.
