The more I listen to it, the more I like it. I used to think it was pretty average and not very exciting, but I love it now.
Also, I think there is a consensus about the fact that the spoken intro to the first track is completely unnecessary.

This is the quintessential indie-folk album. Really, it is quite remarkable. It's at the bottom (of everything (else)) of my charts, and it is pretty precarious, but it has been there awhile, and it has earned its spot. Admittedly, I do think that this album is pretty uneven, but when it hits (i.e. my track picks, which is also the middle of the album) these are some of the best written songs that have ever been recorded.
Track picks:
3. Old Soul Song (For The New World Order)
4. Lua
5. Train Under Water
6. First Day Of My Life

Ah man, I love this album. I think this is some of Conor Oberst's best songwriting, and that guy is supremely talented. "First Day Of My Life" is probably my favorite Bright Eyes song. _________________ 2023 Chart

That's always been the one thing that's bugged the shit out of me about this album. Once that annoyance is out of the way it's really a fantastic album. It's pretty easy to dislike him after that intro, but he quickly brings you back with beautifully written songs.
Me and my fiance also just picked First Day Of My Life as our wedding song, so fond memories will be tied to it for me soon as well.

I've been playing this a lot recently. Funny it showed up on here.
It goes pretty well with the changes from Summer into Autumn.

Just listened to this, it's pretty relaxing, but the ending to the entire album caught me so off guard. It was just a fucking explosion. It's a good album, I needed this. I expected what it would be, but I find it satisfying with the results. _________________

I'm listening to this album for the first time right now, and the spoken intro has already left a pretty poor impression. Here's hoping it picks up

So how is it? My first impression was that it was pretty uninteresting, though I've liked it more each time I've listened to it.

Well, it was certainly a lot better than the opening would indicate. Overall, it was alright. At times it could get pretty dull ("Lua" was a bit of a chore), but it was rather good on the whole and songs like "Train Under Water", "First Day of My Life", and "Road to Joy" were highly enjoyable. I'll probably give it another listen soon.
