- Post subject: Who plays rock & roll today?
|
Alright, I admit that I've been spending too much time listening to 60s, 70s & 80s classic rock music, and the only new music I have really been able to dig deep into is the country scene that has been churning out a steady stream of quite likable rock tunes through the likes of Toby Keith, Randy Houser, Brad Paisley, & Trace Adkins. Lately I have been trying to make up for this deficiency, but I honestly have a hard time getting into most of what is being made today on the rock scene. Sure there are great bands and great albums of the 2000s, but I suppose musical tastes tend to be acquired in the teens and, although altered slightly by new influences, largely stick.
Now, being that this site is filled with people who have much larger knowledge about the music of the 21st century than me, I turn to you people to help me figure out who plays rock & roll today? I am not interested in the grinders, moaners, whiners, and jarrers. For someone growing up on Skynyrd, Springsteen, Stones, Seger & AC/DC, what are the albums of the 21st century not to be missed?
Thanks.

I'd hate to sound like a fanboy, but I have to recommend Tori Amos' American Doll Posse. It's a double-concept album where each song is based on classic rock. "Teenage Hustling" is like the Sex Pistols, for instance.
I also think that The Blue Album by Weezer has a lot of classic rock elements to it, particularly influenced by KISS.

Neither of those albums is likely to meet his criteria.
Hard time thinking of many that would. Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs might (both play a style that driven mainly by drums and bass). Maybe The Killers, Strokes, Vines, White Stripes.
Then there's Muse, but they'd appeal more to the type that liked Pink Floyd, Queen, or Bowie. _________________ <(: @ >

Thanks for the input so far.
White Stripes - Only heard their self-titled one so far and am not too tripped. I guess it's the voice that kills it. Not bad though and will hear the others out.
Mastodon - Listened to Remission from 2002 and it's not going anywhere. I got all their other albums though and will put them higher up in the pile.
At the Drive-In, Fugazi, Baroness - Never heard of these bands. Thanks for the tip.
Tori Amos - Never heard of the American Doll Posse album. Little Earthquakes is a bit too slow for my taste.
Weezer - Sure, I don't mind them. The Blue Album is one of their better. With the risk of being ridiculed, though, I really enjoyed Raditude.
Franz Ferdinand - Listened to Tonight and loved it. Definitely on my list of who to get more albums from.
Kaiser Chiefs - Off with Their Heads has two good songs. Other than that, not yet, but might take a couple more listens.
Muse - Not bad at all (Queen and Bowie were great, as were Floyd once they stopped making noises and ventured into music with Dark Side).
Thanks!

I second wolf on Kings of Leon and the Black Keys. Stick to early Kings of Leon though, so try Youth and Young Manhood as well as Aha Shake Heartbreak. Most Black Keys stuff should appeal to you.
