The sequels were vital in confronting the terrifying implications of the mortality of the toys; a theme which was pretty much ignored in the first film.

Sid's death is merciful and short. I'm talking about a fate worse than death; the purgatory of abandonment. The sequels deepen and expand on all of the themes in the first film. There are so many pressing questions the first film leaves unanswered, and I consider the story far greater as a trilogy. The scope of the first film is quite narrow, and leaving it as a standalone would have been a huge waste of potential.

The main theme of the first film is Woody's fear of abandonment that results in him acting out in narcissistic and nasty behaviour. A new shiny fancy contraption gets thrown into the mix and suddenly Woody's once solid world is rocked by a flood of insecurities. He can't comprehend that Andy could love both him and Buzz and so he belittles Buzz and tries to get rid of him in an attempt to remove the problem (the easy but temporary solution) rather than confront and compromise (the difficult but long lasting solution).

The threat of sudden non-existence at the hands of Sid kicks in a very human/toy urge to survive. This helps Woody and Buzz to find common ground and be content that their unique differences each assist in their dilemma rather than to compare something as trivial as old grungy cowboy boots to new sturdy space boots.

It's a very simple message but a powerful one. I don't think the latter 2 films really shone any more light on anything more important as entertaining as they were at times (though I do think the 3rd has more problems than high points for me).

I like necessary sequels too. Maybe even one or two that were better than the original.

Empire Strikes Back (best Star Wars film, duh)
The Godfather II
Die Hard With A Vengence
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (100000000x better than the first)
Mad Max 2 (better than the original)
The Silence Of The Lambs (if you count it)
Terminator 2
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers as well as Return Of The King
The Dark Knight
Aliens
Spider-Man 2
X2
Toy Story 2

@Jhereko, the second and third films treated the toys' relationship with Andy in a much more complex manner. I'm not saying they were better, just that they explore interesting territory that the first film doesn't. Woody confronting the ephemerality of his relationship with Andy in the second film, passing up the opportunity for a false immortality, then facing the consequences of this decision in the third film, accepting death, then miraculously experiencing rebirth. That's some compelling shit.

Dumb and Dumberer was terrible.

Dumb and Dumber To is filming now. I have high hopes for this one since Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are actually signed on. One can only hope it's even remotely close to the brilliant quality of the original.

Finally, someone got the necessary sequels right.
