The charts are one of the best things about music. It's wonderful to see who is the best at the moment. I wouldn't find music as exciting without the chart side of things.

Best ≠ Most popular, which is what charts are all about. If you enjoy the charts, good for you, though, my bf does the same.

Obviously nowadays the charts are bunk, but until maybe the early '90s they were not completely at the mercy of marketing. When was the last #1 single with any semblance of artistic credibility Question In previous decades, singles like 'Space Oddity', 'Wuthering Heights' or this were number one hits.

I'm not sure the public really embrace new Christmas songs. I think the Darkness had some success with one a while back, but a really good Christmas song I know of from a couple of years ago got only a couple of thousand youtube views.

Artistic credibility sounds like something I can't get behind. I could just see muscians whos greatest hit reached 171 on the chart claming they had 'artistic credibility' and the ones getting near the top were walking commercials.

This said, I can't find a number 1 on the UK chart I have had on repeat this year. There were some favorites of mine making number 1 last year.

There have always been great songs in the top 40, even in the last few years. Ofcourse it can get more exciting. Still there is so much to like.

You're probably right with this. It was kind of pleasing for me to find out recently that 'Long Time Coming' by Delays had been a UK top 20 hit.

In only the past 3 years:

Cee Lo Green - Fuck You
Adele - Someone Like You
Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
Daft Punk - Get Lucky
Naughty Boy - La La La

That's my preference. I'd be surprised if you could actually justify that none of the songs in the recent charts have any 'artistic credibility' compared to any of the songs in your own chart.

Thanks for providing that song list, Puncture Repair. It was a genuine question, by the way, and in no way was it a wholesale claim that there is no enjoyment or value to be found in the current charts. I personally have not listened to commercial radio (which I used to take a certain amount of enjoyment from once upon a time) for about five years but I will admit that I have found quite limited value in any of the #1 hit songs that I have been exposed to since then.
