This list was as i expected, as they and tinymixtapes (and fastnbulbous, if you're a reader) will address more of the "fringe" music than other publications, exploring more recent sub/genres and more pop-obscure albums and genres. There were a couple albums on that list that i'm tucking away in my "to listen to" list before closing out 2013, but i was surprised how many of those i've heard (already)..

The fringe is generally a more interesting place. Higher rate of failure, but worth it.

I find the Quietus to be far more consistent and insightful than the much snarkier TinyMixTapes

Agreed. I might not like a majority of the fringe but i continually return for those albums that really click with me and for just the general pleasure of exploring.

I always expect Rolling Stone to be safe... and to include some 'classic' artists to appeal to their own aging sensibilities. McCartney, Bowie, and Fogerty (!!!) fall into this trend, just like Springsteen, Dylan and Neil Young did in previous years. When an old favourite releases a half decent new album, RS poops their pants. I'm actually surprised that they didn't pick Bowie #1.

I didn't like 1 or 2, 23 and 42 should've been higher, and Boards of Canada got the shaft.

Most importantly, 14 can screw off.

Pretty much all of the lists I've seen so far have looked identical, and made me cringe horribly. The Quietus list was awesome though. So many albums that I'll now have to check out
