This is a fact: Dave Mustaine is a better guitarist than Kirk Hammet or James Hetfield.

Also a fact: Metallica would not exist, or be popular, without Mustaine's guitar work. Most of the songs on Kill 'Em All, a fair amount of them on Ride the Lightning and even one from Master of Puppets were ripped from his compositions.

More facts: "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" is the greatest metal song ever recorded, with "Hallowed Be Thy Name" a very close second.

I have much love for early Metallica, but they are far from the best metal band. I'd say the best would be Black Sabbath, but Motorhead and Judas Priest are also in the running.

Consider all of these before you decide:
    AC/DC-Back in Black
    AC/DC-Highway to Hell
    Black Sabbath-Paranoid
    Deep Purple-Machine Head
    Def Leppard-Pyromania
    Guns N' Roses-Appetite for Destruction
    Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin II
    Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin IV
    Metallica-Master of Puppets
    Van Halen-Van Halen

That's not a fact. Its untrue that Metallica would not exist or not be popular. At least its subjective. Aside from that, only in 2 songs from Ride the Lighting, the title track and The Call of Ktulu (one of the best instrumentals by the band) were PARTIALLY written by Mustaine. The only song that can really be referred as a rip-off without being subjective is Mechanix.

As if Metallica is the best ever metal band... well, it could be. Iron Maiden has the advantage of not constantly repeating the same riff and structure and noises because they play another genre of metal. Thrash is way more repetive than generic heavy metal. But still Metallica has some songs that any other metal band could not possibly write or perform. The perfect example is Fade to Black. Megadeth playing Fade to Black definately doesent fit.

For me, the definite metal album is a 3-tie between Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, which of course gives Metallica the advantage.

Still, Metallica has 4 good albums, and then on, it just sucks. I hate how they became commercial, and although Death Magnetic was a great effort to go back to their origins, they still need to write a Master of Puppets or For Whom the Bell Tolls to achieve it.

In conclusion, I cant pick for myself which is the best metal band ever. I'll leave it to yourselves. But definately it stays between Iron Maiden and Metallica, being Black Sabbath the close second, with Paranoid the album that took me into heavy metal.

BTW, (and IMHO) these are the best metal songs ever (i know theres no JP):

1. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
2. Fade to Black - Metallica
3. War Pigs - Black Sabbath
4. Phantom of the Opera - Iron Maiden <-- check how they used this structure in MoP
5. Master of Puppets - Metallica
6. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
7. Holy Wars - Megadeth
8. Fear of the Dark - Iron Maiden
9. One - Metallica
10. The Trooper - Iron Maiden

And the top ten metallica songs (i will just put what i remind at the moment)

1. Fade to Black <-- applerill, it IS their best
2. Master of Puppets
3. One <--- excellent ending
4. Suicide and Redemption <-- best song from new album
5. For Whom the Bell Tolls
6. Sanitarium
7. Orion
8. The Call of Ktulu
9. Creeping Death
10. ...and Justice for All

I'd really hate to be a snob, but based on this thread, and maybe besides luis, I don't think any of you know anything about heavy metal. Very Happy

I've listened to almost everyone, and as far as I'm concerned the only decent metal comes from Scandinavia.
