Just found out the cause and it is to do with our mail server appearing on a Hotmail grey-list. We're putting in place some background measures to stop this happening again (e.g. adding DNS SPF records, Sender ID etc to make Hotmail a bit happier).
This problem only seems to affect Hotmail email addresses (their email policy is a bit different to other mail services).

Nope, not fixed yet. Received 14 messages at 4:34 AM ET this morning, all extremely delayed. For instance one was Posted: Fri Jun 04, 2010 22:37 but not received until Sat 6/05/10 4:34
Can I turn off email notifications (topic, private message, etc) from webmaster and still receive email notifications from albummaster (comment replies, chart ratings, etc) until the problem is fixed? How? _________________ Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by RFNAPLES

That's really weird. I wonder if this is just a Hotmail problem as no other users have reported this issue. Yes, you can turn off forum notifications whilst still keeping site notifications. On your profile page, you can choose 'no' to 'Always notify me of replies' and 'Notify on Private Message'.
The delayed messages that you just received: were they related to the forum, or the main site? We've made changes to our DNS to be more friendly to Hotmail, so I'm surprised that there are still issues.
