Tomboy by Panda Bear
Chart: Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by noWaxJim
Rank on User's Chart: 4
Year: 2011
Rank on BEA Overall: 1,438
Average Rating: 70/100
Summary Info: The fourth solo album by Noah Lennox (also a member of the band Animal Collective) who goes under the stage name, Panda Bear. Compared to previous efforts, such as the highly successful Person Pitch (2007), this album places more empahsis on guitar and rhythm.
NoWaxJim wrote: | PICK - Benfica; FIRST HEARD: via Animal Collective fixation. Always liked Noah's 4th LP but after seeing him and Sonic Boom play the whole album live from start to finish in December 2011 I finally realised how well it all hangs together. In fact to such an extent that I honestly consider this to not only be Panda Bear's finest LP - superior even to the fantastic Person Pitch - but better than anything he's done with his Animal Collective buddies. And as a self-confessed AC geek, that's saying something. |
Details on the implementation and chart selection process of "User Pick of the Day" can be found here and here, respectively. A chart documenting the previous picks can be found here.

Not entirely satisfactory, too uneven. However, when it scores, it really does ("Alsatian Darn", "Slow Motion"...)

Love this album, but for me doesn't hold a candle to Person Pitch. Wish Tomboy had more of the long form stuff like Bros

I was really disappointed by Tomboy when it came out. Person Pitch was such a remarkable album and, like Norman said, Tomboy was really uneven in comparison. Has some great songs though. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

stepping away from comparisons to Person Pitch (which, I too, think is the far superior album and is among my favorites of all-time, though my chart doesn't show it since I haven't heard it yet this year), Tomboy actually was a pretty decent album, imo. as far as its kind of music goes, i was kind of surprised at how lackluster the reception was. it was better than most flavor-of-the-month indie releases, and though it lacked the depth of the best Animal Collective (and associated) works, it had plenty of charm and some great melodies and atmospheres.

Pretty great album imo, it builds a great atmosphere that somehow makes me think of sea waves on a cloudy day, really really chilling. Person Pitch is much better though...
