This self-titled debut from Buck Owens broke away from the norms of Nashville at the time. Owens recorded mostly live with his band instead of typical session musicians. He also was allowed more creative control in the studio than most country musicians.

Not to be confused with the other self-titled Buck Owens LP (La Brea, the one with the barn on it), this debut LP on Capitol is packed with A sides and B sides from the turn of the 1960s. It is a prime example of honky tonk country music that came before Owens and musician Don Rich introduced the Bakersfield Sound and a stream of #1 hits that had some crossover appeal.

If Owens hadn't assembled a crackerjack band and development a distinct sound, this would have remained his finest album. It is a true classic, with some classic Harlan Howard original songs and clear-as-a-bell production from Ken Nelson.

Highlights are the A sides Under Your Spell Again, Above and Beyond and Excuse Me.

Essential.
