Mitski’s transition into the Nashville sound is a perfect fit. Her earnest self-doubting lyrics fit in with many a honky tonk legend. Her lush production translates wonderfully into the soaring strings and detailed guitars. However, it feels almost a bit too on the nose. Everything done here is so her style that she doesn’t push herself. It all stays comfortably in its lane without any standout moments. A good album that is strangely boring because of its competence.
