“Zach Bryan” is based on intimacy. Moments of great sadness or quiet affection are the center of the lyrics. Bryan makes these feelings even more powerful with little details like the geographic features or seasons when they took place. “El Dorado” is a heartbreaking story of not knowing if a friend is alive or not. The instrumentals are basic country guitars with a light touch of strings. They are not ambitious but assist greater in the emotional starkness. The album is amazingly consistent but lacks a climax or wow moment. It seems content to tell solid stories at the cost of not being all-encompassing.
