Mid-career triumph? Richard Dawson is in too rich a vein of form to call it just that, but End of the Middle (a nod to both his life stage and discography) sees him cast his lyrical focus back to the minitiae of everyday life. A real gem of a writer who has enough deftness to capture the times without evangelising.

Progressive-folk
I'd somehow never heard of Richard Dawson until four months ago...and now I can't stop listening to him. Like an extremely stripped back, folkier Belle & Sebastian from 150 miles further south.
'Bullies' and 'Knot' are exceptional.
The abrasive instrumentation and Dawson's voice appear to be lost in a cul-de-sac with no escape ginnel in sight. Dawson always finds a way out, whether it's scampering up the drive and over private fences or losing himself with tempo altering gems such as:
"Waddling down the aisle comes a Golden Retriever
in a waistcoat and dickybow
golden rings dangling from a length of golden string
and a thread of drool swaying to and fro"
...whilst you are wondering where he went, he's disappeared to the social club buffet, hoovering up the last of the corned-beef pie...then he's gone again...
"I got a phone call at work today from Joshua's school
Asking me to come right away
I was in the middle of a Zoom
With one of our most important clients, Majestic Wine
He's been scrapping again, broke a lad's jaw, and now he's suspended
Pending further investigation
What am I gonna do with this kid?"
The observations and little lyrical nuggets of joy are what makes this one of the best albums of the year.
