A new McKinley Dixon album is always a high point of the year but this latest album takes things at least two steps forwards. It's a brilliant, thrill ride from start to finish, like eating chicken soba ramen at Zagin in Kobe, then remembering you've got the side order of beef to devour at the end. Succulent.
Perhaps less jazzy than previous releases but it's cohesive, like a family picnicking in a field with an out of control combine harvester on the warpath.

Amazing album. I thought 'Beloved! Paradise! Jazz?!' set a high bar but based on my first impression, McKinley Dixon clears it with 'Magic, Alive!'. Like his previous album, there's a great flow between the tracks, taking audiences on a journey through lush instrumentation and very personal, thought provoking lyrics. I love how he's able to explore some of the same themes and ideas from 'Jazz' in a fresh and interesting way. This album makes it clear that I need to go back and listen to the rest of Dixon's discography and definitely keep an eye out for any future releases.

McKinley Dixon has come into his own as one of music's most thoughtful emcees. The heart and soul that he puts into his work shines through in every bar, every beat, and every minute detail is stunning. It's a joy to experience his music
