This is something of a "back to basics" album compared to her last set of originals, 2021's "Blood," which was apparently Hatfield's first home-recorded LP. My guess is that she was having lots of fun with the new gear, the new software, and all the digital electro/metal trickery it allowed her to do without having to convince some producer to "just try it." The songs on this album are actually better than the ones on "Blood" (at least in my opinion) — they just sound more conventional, with sparser instrumentation that probably also makes this album much more "tourable" than the last one. Of course, the songs are always the highlight of any Juliana Hatfield album, and while this one's not up to the standard set by 2008's "How To Walk Away," it may be her best album since then.
