Over the course of their career, Softcult (twin sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn) have slowly, and almost imperceptibly, moved from the heavy-grunge side of the shoegaze scale (even going so far as to call themselves "riotgaze" initially) and more towards the gauzy-dreampop side, while still maintaining their nice-as-all-get-out vocal harmonies, general melodic sensibility, and most other aspects of their overall sound. I'm not sure why this band (okay, it's a "duo") isn't more popular — maybe they're just not sufficiently good at self-promotion, or maybe the name "Softcult" scares people off because nobody wants their kids to join a cult, regardless of how soft it is or how many twin sisters are involved. They've even gone to the extent of making their records NYOP downloads on Bandcamp, at least for the time being. How can you not like that? I can't think of a reason, and I can usually think of everything.
