Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 80.0/100, a mean average of 79.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.0.

Impresive!
Maybe the best prog album of 2024.
Great voice. Good jazz side.
There's a great photo on instagram of Geordie Greep posing with like a dozen different Brazilian records. It's a nice little look into how The New Sound might have come together. Brazilian sounds are hardly the only influence on here, there's some carrying over of the modern post punk sound black midi was formed in as well as plenty of showtunes, though they're what stand out most to me and probably lead to the best tracks. These are the most danceable tracks you'll hear about a modern generation of pathetic men, whether their problem is self importance (Blues/Terra), a desire for control (Through A War/As If Waltz) or a misogyny tinged self consciousness (Holy Holy). It's hard to tell if there's anything inward facing or open about this music or if it's really just a parade of grotesque people, either way each track is sung with a real passion that you'll either be bowled over by or will drive you nuts depending on your opinion of Geordie's voice (I love it, why sound normal?).
brilliant , as good as anything he did with black midi 9/10
The Greep sounds like an internet age Donald Fagen on his solo debut and I’m all for it ?

You can't expect anything conventional from one of the most distinctive personalities in experimental rock in recent years. In The New Sound, we dive deep into Geordie Greep's creative arsenal, shedding more light on what he brings (or brought?) to the table as part of black midi.
Greep has much to say, often delving into uncomfortable territory, yet he delivers every line with total confidence, forging the bizarre character that only he can portray. Lyrically, he takes us across a spectrum that ranges from sweet romanticism to unhinged libido.
This is backed up by quite the handful of session musicians, blending symphonic grandeur with tropical getaway vibes (Tristan Bongos!) and occasional cacophonies, all of which parallel the lyrical themes. Throughout the runtime, the chemistry among the musicians is flawlessly maintained.
With all this said, this project is one that black midi fans simply can't (and won't) miss.
This might actually be a strong contender for AOTY.

I've never been a big fan of this guy's voice, both his creative voice and his actual singing. And this time around the music is just way less interesting than any thing from black midi, whom I wasn't even really that thrilled with to begin with. I really like the drumming on the opening track, but past that, I found little to enjoy with this project. But hey, if you like to indulge in this guy's music, more power to you. I'm just always less than enthused with most of his creative endeavors, sadly.

This is so groundbreaking, of course it is the new sound. This is 50 years ahead of its time.

Far better than any Black Midi album - Holy, Holy and The Magician particularly are masterful
