I believe (and I'm definitely in the minority here) that "Contra" is VW's best album. At first, this album seemed a bit bland to me, by comparison - the variety of textural elements is less dizzying. Hell, I think it's impressive if you can effectively mix afropop, classical music, and techno into a feasible mainstream track. But the songwriting on MVOTC eventually won me over; there are still hooks aplenty, but there seems to be an added seriousness both in sound and lyrical content. I can understand why a lot of people finally warmed up to Vampire Weekend with this album, which is undoubtedly a classic. Suggested Track: "Unbelievers"

One of the most overhyped albums of the year - but a great album, too. "Discovery" was my first real exposure to Daft Punk and I can't say this really reaches the heights of that classic, but its strongest songs are right up there with the best of their catalog. It may not be utterly boundary-smashing but it's an album to come back to. Suggested Track: "Doin' It Right"

Pure aural candy. High-intensity chiptine/pop/insanity. Some people might be turned off by the sugar rush (especially one that lasts 76 minutes), but I've always had a sweet tooth. Suggested Track: "Pastel Flags"

Expressing my preference for this album over a recent Jay-Z release led to the first time I was ever called a "backpacker." I know it was supposed to be an insult, but it doesn't really bother me - frankly, I find this fun, accessible, genuine effort by Aceyalone too likable to regret suggesting it. The incorporation of a strong funk element (e.g. horn and rhythm guitar samples) makes it all the more likable. It might be hip hop music for 30-year-old white people, but hell, I'm a 30-something white person so I enjoy it. What can I say? Suggested Track: "30 and Up"

For me, this album was a grower - in some ways it's still growing on me. Much of my fondness comes from one amazing song, "Colombia" - something about it touches me in a deep way that's touch to articulate. Suggested Track: "Colombia"
