Country 1-100
by

Warning! This list is highly revisionist. Alt-Country, Americana, Appalachian Folk, Bluegrass, and Country-Rock all qualify for this list in addition to the "classic" and "mainstream" country sounds. Think big umbrella with some holes: I include what I want to include and the rules are very arbitrary. Like a lot of lists, individual rankings mean very little after about #20, stuff gets added and removed all the time. I do not guarantee, nor care about, consistency with my other charts for this or any of my genre specific lists.

John Prine's acerbic wit is put on stunning display on the best songs of this album, and barely concealed behind an illegal smile on the lesser ones. No bad songs, just echelons of great.

Imagine if Nick Foles retired after tying the touchdown record in 2013 except instead of his 2nd season he did it in his first, in the first game, and he broke the record instead of tying it, and no one heard about it for a long time. That's kind of like this album... only the album is way better.

The high-point of the outlaw country movement. Conceptually erudite and emotionally acute, Willie proves he is the master story teller of country western music (as if he had anything left to prove before he made this album). I give a paper-thin edge to Prine and Ramsey because they wrote all the songs on their albums, but in reality, it's a three way tie for first... Actually more like a 5 way tie.

Is this really a country album? No, it's americana (like I said in my list intro). But it's ranked over John Prine in your main chart! I know (like I said in my intro) but this chart is specifically focusing on the country elements within the albums on the list. Country music generally values certain elements of song craft over others (e.g. lyrics over instrumental virtuosity). If you think this is a bad argument (you might be right) go make your own chart!

Slightly less progressive and complex as RHS, but therefore, more restrained and focused and equally sharp of tongue and wit. If "Red Headed Stranger" is Nelson's "Ulysses" then this is his "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man". And yes, Willie is basically the James Joyce of country music. I wonder what would have happened if he had taken 17 years and made an album equivalent to "Finnegans Wake"? It probably would have sucked.

Originally recorded in 1972 as "All American Music" as released in a limited run of 8-tracks after the single "Dallas" didn't sell. It's difficult to imagine what kind of commercial success they were expecting from this collection of old-school, hillbilly originals anyway... except, of course, the fact that each song is amazing. It just took 20 years for everyone else to figure it out.
[First added to this chart: 05/10/2015]
Finally, an album with some flaws! But what earnest, charming, and comedic flaws!!! So yeah, Midnight in Paris might not be the greatest way to open the album, but it certainly sets a wacky tone that gets played upon in a slightly subdued, more successful, register throughout the rest of the album. Lots of other bands from Yo La Tengo to The Butthole Surfers have started with the weirdest/most challenging song on an album to deter the uninitiated. I can't say it's my favorite strategy, but one thing's for sure: this album will always leave you smilin'. Plus, Slurf Song might be the greatest song about food ever written (I, not so secretly, wish the album started with this song).

Get drunk, make bad decisions, and repeat. This is Gary Stewart's mantra on "Out of Hand", which continues to escalate throughout, culminating in the disturbing "Williamson County". Stewart has a keen sense of what he wants to do thematically, evidenced by the expert sequencing of the songs here (rare for a country album): party 'til the party turns sour, then wallow in what cannot be undone. These routine themes in country music become poignant and fresh again in this masterpiece.
Favorite Gary Stewart Songs:
-Drinkin' Thing [Out Of Hand]
-She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles) [Out Of Hand]
-Honky-Tonkin' [Out Of Hand]

The Possum didn't exactly have anything left to prove by 1974, in fact Wikipedia will tell you this album was released during his "Alcoholism and Decline" period, well it's just like Jones to be at his peak just as he is hitting bottom. The song "The Grand Tour" hit number 1 on the country charts and "Once You've Had the Best" hit number 3. Ok so, "Our Private Life" and, especially, "Mary Don't Go 'round" are in a different register and kind of ruin the pathos of the album at the end, but are good songs in their own right.

Waylon has a voice to be reckoned with on this album and with, then unknown, Billy Joe Shaver writing the songs there was no stopping it from becoming a classic. Unfortunately for Shaver, he gave Waylon all his best songs and Waylon, as a superior arranger, made Shaver's own recordings of the songs (such as the ones on "Old Five and Dimers Like Me") pale in comparison. An album with a bit of everything made perfect by one artist at the height of his powers, and another hungry to be noticed.

A lot of these are the kind of records that a person like me, who doesn't listen to much country, can remember from the days when country hits used to cross over onto Top 40 Pop AM radio. Great hits by Charlie Rich, Tanya Tucker etc. Or were covered by rock or pop artists.Like John Prine's Hello in There, or Delta Dawn. Both of which are on Bette Midler's debut album, which is a classic album in itself, tho nobody believes me. Its in my Top 100, that's how good it is. Joe Ely and Rodney Crowell I also got exposed to in the 80 s, and became a fan.I never became a fan of Jessi Colter tho, even tho she had a HUGE pop hit. She was married to one of those country stars, I think. Can't remember which one tho.

A very unique genre specific chart...love seeing Hoyt Axton on there. A very under appreciated artist! You might like The Jack Grace Band if you are not already familiar with him/them.

A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
