Red Headed Stranger is attached in my mind to a very specific memory of crossing the St. Marys River between the international twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I was stuck in traffic, hauling a little cargo trailer, and feeling intensely the estrangement and isolation highlighted by Willie Nelson's lyrics. The mythic tale told on this record, as described in Paul Nelson's review for Rolling Stone, has a "hard-won simplicity [that] calls forth the same complex and profound metaphysical responses as those brought about by the matter-of-fact awesomeness of the Rocky Mountains." My favorite track here is Willie's cover of Fred Rose's stark, heart-rending, retro-sounding "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain."

The fact that this gem isn't in the top 1000 on this site is a real crime. Willie is a treasure, and this is his most impactful work.

One of, if not the, best country album I've ever heard. The sparse instrumentation accents the story, the lyrics, and the melody and it's all gorgeous. Incredible album.

This isn't as brilliant an album as critics often say it is, but it probably wouldn't be if Willie Nelson could sing a little better. A great concept album, if just shy of being a masterpiece. I think I like Phases and Stages a bit better.

Truly brilliant concept album. Took me quite a few listens to really enjoy, but after 30+ times it still keeps growing.
