Country 1-100 by briggs54

Warning! This list is highly revisionist. Alt-Country, Americana, Appalachian Folk, Bluegrass, and Country-Rock all qualify for this list in addition to the "classic" and "mainstream" country sounds. Think big umbrella with some holes: I include what I want to include and the rules are very arbitrary. Like a lot of lists, individual rankings mean very little after about #20, stuff gets added and removed all the time. I do not guarantee, nor care about, consistency with my other charts for this or any of my genre specific lists.

Is this really a country album? No, it's americana (like I said in my list intro). But it's ranked over John Prine in your main chart! I know (like I said in my intro) but this chart is specifically focusing on the country elements within the albums on the list. Country music generally values certain elements of song craft over others (e.g. lyrics over instrumental virtuosity). If you think this is a bad argument (you might be right) go make your own chart!

Favorite The Band Songs:
-Acadian Driftwood [Northern Lights-Southern Cross]
-Ophelia [Northern Lights-Southern Cross]
-Don't Do It [The Best of The Band]
-The Weight [Music From Big Pink]
-Long Black Veil [Music From Big Pink]
-The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down [The Band]
-Rockin' Chair [The Band]

Another wonderful, yet flawed, album to which I still give a high ranking. Here we have to opposite problem of Have Moicy: the last song is Hippie Boy and it is not great. After 10 -pretty much flawless- songs (why do you even need 11????) they decided to add this meandering, cringe-worthy blues number at the close of the album. Man, that's frustrating. Still the album has more interesting and original ideas in the 10 other songs than most country artists have in an entire career. I know "Do Right Woman" and "Dark End of the Street" are covers... but still, they're covers Gram makes into the best version of that song, just like he does with Wild Horses in the next Burrito Brothers album.

Favorite Gram Parsons Songs:
-Blue Eyes [Safe at Home]
-Christine’s Tune (Devil In Disguise) [The Gilded Palace Of Sin]
-Sin City [The Gilded Palace Of Sin]
-Do You Know How It Feels [The Gilded Palace Of Sin]
-Do Right Woman [The Gilded Palace Of Sin]
-Dark End Of The Street [The Gilded Palace Of Sin]
-Image Of Me [Burrito Deluxe]
-Wild Horses [Burrito Deluxe]
-Still Feeling Blue [GP]
-That's All It Took [GP]
-The New Soft Shoe [GP]
-Streets Of Baltimore [GP]
-Return of the Grievous Angel [Grievous Angel]
-In My Hour Of Darkness [Grievous Angel]

It wasn't God who made honky-tonk angels, it was the men who lied and cheated first. Although the Kitty Wells classic isn't on this album, its spirit run through every groove of this record. [First added to this chart: 03/02/2017]

A lot of these are the kind of records that a person like me, who doesn't listen to much country, can remember from the days when country hits used to cross over onto Top 40 Pop AM radio. Great hits by Charlie Rich, Tanya Tucker etc. Or were covered by rock or pop artists.Like John Prine's Hello in There, or Delta Dawn. Both of which are on Bette Midler's debut album, which is a classic album in itself, tho nobody believes me. Its in my Top 100, that's how good it is. Joe Ely and Rodney Crowell I also got exposed to in the 80 s, and became a fan.I never became a fan of Jessi Colter tho, even tho she had a HUGE pop hit. She was married to one of those country stars, I think. Can't remember which one tho.

A very unique genre specific chart...love seeing Hoyt Axton on there. A very under appreciated artist! You might like The Jack Grace Band if you are not already familiar with him/them.
