Gojira has been around forever and have established themselves as one of the greatest bands in metal, but even a band that's been around a long time can change things up once in awhile, and Gojira does a bit. They went for a more contemplative feel on some of the tracks here, rather than the typical high-energy approach they go for. It's clear that the Duplantier brothers poured all the pain and anguish they felt from losing their mother into this album, it's an emotional album, and as such, it's powerful. Technically speaking, it's impressive, and that should really come as no surprise from Gojira. The guitar solos at the end of Silvera are enough to drop any guitarists jaw. Overall, it's a really well-done album, and another addition to the fantastic discography that is Gojira's.

While this may be an album that's par for the course for Inquisition, it's still well-rounded, solid metal album. Inquisition have a unique sound, blending metal genres and creating an album that's tight and aggressive, but not too formulaic. There are times when the band feels like they're repeating themselves, but in general, this album is interesting and, at times, hypnotic, making for one of the more interesting metal albums of the year. If you listen to the lyrics of this album, you'll find that the album's title is pretty reflective of its attitude. On the surface, this album sounds like light, springy shoegaze, but if you look closer into the album, you can see anger and bitterness. Lead singer Domenic Palermo recently suffered brain trauma after he was jumped, and you can imagine what kind of attitude that would give someone. As far as Palermo is concerned, humankind is basically crap, there's no point, there's no purpose to any of it. The lyrics have this overwhelming sense of nihilism, people are useless and worthless, nothing matters, that's why the title makes so much sense. Palermo is tired of people, tired of life, tired of tomorrow. [First added to this chart: 07/11/2023]

I've always heard that ambient music is supposed to be like wallpaper, and it often is. But much ambient music is like movie wallpaper, like a waterfall in an office or something, gently in the background and moving. That's what Sunergy is. Sunergy is awash in crashing waves, Terry Riley style minimalism, and dancing synths. It makes for a beautiful ambient album that acts as that active wallpaper, sitting in the background, but not boring you. [First added to this chart: 07/26/2022]

Lydia Loveless' music sounds like it should be on some old jukebox in a country western bar. She has this real genuine quality to her music, it feels real and raw, and it's that feeling that complements her similar lyrics so well. On Real, Loveless tackles messy relationships, her own personal flaws and failings, and hard lessons life has taught her. It's a raw, painful album that showcases Loveless' fantastic songwriting talent. [First added to this chart: 05/05/2020]

You can always predict a handful of things to be on a doom metal album. Slow riffs, heavy, slow drumming, thick guitar effects, it's on every doom metal album, it's part of what makes doom metal doom metal. Spirit Adrift use all of that here, but they don't rely on it as a crutch, there's depth here if you listen to it. This is soulful, emotive doom metal, it's emotionally evocative and powerful, while still technically impressive. It's a really impressive album. [First added to this chart: 03/07/2019]

The genre of stoner rock can often get repetitive, with one stoner rock band sounding like all the others. But Salem's Pot have crafted their own unique sound through a blending of genres and an overall freaky, kind of creepy mood, that likely owes a lot of itself to the band's obsession with horror movies. The range alone on this album is impressive, from songs that sound like psych jams to tunes that almost feel like they have a pop structure to them. It's a strange but fascinating album that rarely wears out its welcome. [First added to this chart: 01/15/2019]
