If there’s one thing to take away from Future Islands, it’s energy. It may not sound like it at first, at first listen it sounds like regular synthpop, this isn’t the Ramones or anything, but there’s a lot of energy there. Lead singer Samuel Herring sounds like he’s about to explode at any moment, like he’s holding in all of this energy and it’s coming out in little spurts here and there, but he won’t completely let it out. At least, not until “Fall From Grace” where he lets loose and hits you with everything he’s been holding onto. If you see Future Islands perform (and a lot of people saw their performance on Letterman), you can see the kind of energy he has, dancing around, looking like he just wants to pull a David Lee Roth jump kick every few minutes rather than sing. It’s powerful, that kind of energy, it’s infectious. Herring’s vocals are what really puts this album over the top, without him, it would sound relatively generic, but with him, it sounds passionate, like he’s improvising the whole time.

Highlights include: “Fall From Grace”, “Seasons (Waiting On You)” and “A Song For Our Grandfathers”.

Death Grips are just insane. Everything they do is just pure mania, it's chaotic but in a really cool way. It feels like they're losing their minds and at any second the whole album could just explode. Similar to "Government Plates", this album just blows by fast. Now granted, this is supposed to be part one of two, but it's still a decent length album, if not just a slightly shorter than normal album. It's impressive, manic, and definitely interesting. On this album, Eyehategod do what they're good at. They fuse metal and punk and create a loud, aggressive album. Is this their best stuff? No, but it's still solid nonetheless. Mike Williams can still kill it vocally and Jimmy Bower can still make some chunky, powerful riffs, and that's what makes this album cool. [First added to this chart: 09/14/2017]

For a little over a decade, Super Furry Animals gave us some really interesting, really good quality indie rock. Stuff that has inspired other artists of the 2000s. Gruff Rhys is the lead singer of Super Furry Animals and has released another solo album, his fourth, and in all honesty, it might as well be a Super Furry Animals album, it sounds incredibly similar to their stuff, and not just because Rhys is singing, it sounds similar in style. Slightly different a times, but still very similar. It’s good stuff too, a very varied album with a lot of stuff going on that keeps you paying attention.

Highlights include: “100 Unread Messages”, “American Interior” and “The Last Conquistador”.

This album is like a whirlwind. From the very start this album pounds you over the head, again and again, like being caught in the middle of a tornado. This album is also meant as somewhat of a satire, sort of a joke. You can tell with some of the stuff that goes on, whether it’s them using the theme from Phantom of the Opera underneath the pounding power chords of “Serious Business”, or the band shouting “WE FOUND GOD/WE FOUND GOD” in “United Nations Finds God”, there’s a sense of humor here. Specifically, United Nations takes a pretty direct shot at Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Rickly has called their music pretentious and imitates them in “F#A#$” (a reference to GY!BE’s debut album “F#A#∞”), referencing their music and their sound. It actually provides a nice rest after the onslaught that this album is. All in all this is a pretty interesting album. It takes some time, but understanding the context around it, it’s a pretty cool album. [First added to this chart: 06/23/2015]
