Top 100 Music Albums of 2020 by Purplepash
Not as good a year as recently in terms of awesome albums (my current #1 probably wouldn't have made my top 5 in the last few years), but still lots to enjoy. I am already bumping off really good albums I truly enjoy. A great year for post-punk though, (which has been promising over the last few years and has really come through this year) with three post-punk albums in my top 10, and another couple with post-punk influences.

Best UK album of the year [First added to this chart: 10/01/2020]
Best Australian album of the year
In such a crazy year where so much of our daily way of life changed, it is so comforting to have a new King Gizzard album where they have given us more of what we already know and love from them. Just last night (as of typing this) I went to a German restaurant, but which sausage to get? The bratwurst, the kransky, The Berliner curry, the Vienna pork? So why not get them all with the sausage platter! That's what this KG album brings to mnd for me, with a little bit of many of their past releases in all new songs. Sometimes a mix of a couple of albums in single songs. They have cleverly managed to do this with a seamless flow so that nothing stands out in a jarring way, even managing to finish the album with a song containing elements of Infest The Rat's Nest that still sounds like it belongs with the rest of the album. Even more importantly EVERY SINGLE SONG on this album is great!!! [First added to this chart: 12/07/2020]
I've really been getting into live albums over the last few years and this is one of the best I've heard so far. It probably helps that this is from a tour that I did see them live, in a smallish venue of a size that I can't see them playing a gig at that small again). Fantastic set list mainly featuring some of my favourites from Nonagon Infinity, and Mind Fuzz, but the classics The River and Head On/The Pill are the highlights here. I love the Audible "Fuck Yeah" from someone in the crowd at the opening notes of The River, perfectly encapsulating what my thought would be at the opening notes of The River live. The only blemish here is Trapdoor, but I have never felt much for that song anway. Always thought it was a bit of a weak single and more a throaway album filler type of track. A great follow up to their impressive debut album from this Melbourne feminist punk trio. Great vocals and lyrics over some post-punk rhythms and shredding guitars. [First added to this chart: 04/10/2020]
Best USA album of the year
I may be a biased Ty Segal fan but with Ty, Charlie from CFM, and Chad from Meatbodies I knew this was going to be great...again...just like the other Fuzz albums. And continuing on after One from Fuzz, and II from II, it finishes with an excellent epic closer. [First added to this chart: 10/25/2020]
Best Japanese album of the year [First added to this chart: 06/19/2021]
Considering Protomartyr just keep getting better and better with every album, and based on the tracks I had already heard I expected this to go straight into my top 10, and I wasn't wrong. Top quality post-punk for today. [First added to this chart: 09/04/2020]

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.3/100, a mean average of 93.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.3.

Another thought provoking chart, with a couple of (previously undiscovered) albums to add to my own 2020 chart. Ain't that what BEA user charts are all about! As always, loving the Aussie connection ~ no room here for DMA's, The Apartments, Suzie Stapleton???
Great chart, haven't heard the majority of these but I enjoyed pretty much all the ones I have heard. I really dig Idles, this one just happens to be my least favorite of their albums so far. Still great though. Oh and I had no idea about the Grandaddy re-recording, I DEFINITELY need to check that out!
Like you, I'm still finding myself bumping really good albums off my 2020 chart to make room for albums I've discovered more recently that I enjoy even more. I have a feeling, now that I've checked out your chart, that I'll be adding some new albums, thanks to your recommendation. I'm starting at the top with Ultra Mono.
Fantastic chart. I could easily just copy and call it my top 100 as well! Excited to check out some of the bands I've never heard of, including Silverbacks and Deserta and others.
Thanks Zep! I don't know about the quality though...I like a lot of crap no one else likes ;-)
Great chart with many albums I've never heard of. They're probably quality as always. Good stuff Purple!
